Preparing for lymphatic drainage massage
- Arrive at your appointment well hydrated. Dehydration will impair your ability to detoxify and may make you feel ill.
- Avoid shaving the day of your appointment.
- Drainage will be performed in the deep abdomen and organs.
Arrive with an empty stomach or if your appointment is in the morning please eat something light as you could feel nauseaus receiving drainage if you're hungry or haven't had anything to eat yet in the day.
A few hours prior to treatment is ideal.
- Avoid heavy, greasy, salty foods.
- Avoid applying lotion, oil, deodorant and perfume prior to your appointment.
- Avoid alcohol the night before or immediately after your session. Your liver will be responsible for detoxifying much of what the lymphatic system collects so please no burdening it before your session or you may feel sick afterwards.
- Plan for a period of MOVEMENT following your session. Your lymph collects toxins and places them into the blood stream for removal. 10 to 15 minutes of gentle movement such as yoga, dance, rebounder or even a walk is great. This will help continue the flow of fluids and assist with the detoxing process.
- Plan for a period of REST after treatment if needed. Your body's resources and nutrients will be
"cleaning up shop". Rest will allow the body to regenerate and heal.
- If you are already sick, feeling under the weather, or recovering from illness, please reschedule your appointment The first acute 24-48 hours of illness is NOT the appropriate time to receive Lymphatic Drainage Massage. Your immune system may increase it’s response and likely make symptoms worse.
- If you don't need to urinate immediately after your session you are likely dehydrated.
Consider drinking more clear filtered water the day before your next visit.
Post TREATMENT
Every person will respond to LDM differently. Responses vary depending on diet, hydration and overall health. Changes can occur immediately and sometimes up to seven days after treatment. You may feel calm and relaxed following your treatment, you may feel recharged. You may feel tired, sore, or achy after, or at some point all of the above! Everyone responds differently and it’s important to listen to your body if it’s wanting rest following a treatment as your body is detoxing and requires extra TLC.
- Avoid Heat. Steer clear of hot baths, saunas, or intense heat exposure for at least 24 hours post-treatment. High heat eat can dilate blood vessels and potentially counteract the benefits of lymphatic drainage.
- Hydrate. Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and support lymphatic circulation. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces.
- Dry Brush. Incorporate dry brushing into your self care routine a few times per week. Even once a week will be a benefit. Use a natural bristle brush and gently brush your skin in upward strokes, towards the heart. Dry brushing can help exfoliate the skin, stimulate lymphatic flow, and improve circulation.
- Avoid Alcohol. To optimize the effectiveness of your LDM, avoid alcohol for at least three days before and after the treatment. Alcohol can dehydrate the body which can hinder the lymphatic system’s function. Abstaining from alcohol helps ensure that your lymphatic system can perform at its best during and after the session.
- Maintain a Healthy Diet. A balanced, anti-inflammatory diet is key to supporting healing and overall health. Consume a variety of whole foods to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Minimize processed foods, excessive salt intake, and alcohol consumption as they can contribute to fluid retention.
- Limit Caffeine. Like alcohol, caffeine can dehydrate the body and hinder lymphatic function. Limit your intake of caffeine during the recovery period.
- Light Movement. Gentle movements and stretching exercises promote lymphatic flow. Activities such as dancing, walking, yoga, pilates, rebounding or light cardio can be particularly beneficial. These activities encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid and support overall well-being. Strenuous activity and heavy weights should be avoided for 24 hrs to encourage optimal results.
- Skin Care. Following your LDM, it’s essential to care for your skin. Use mild skincare products and avoid harsh chemicals on the treated area. By maintaining healthy skin, you can help prevent irritation and maintain the integrity of your skin’s barrier.
- Rest. Adequate rest and quality sleep are essential for your body’s healing processes. Ensure you get enough rest to support recovery. Quality sleep helps the body repair and regenerate, contributing to a healthier lymphatic system and overall well-being.
- The Legs Up the Wall yoga pose. This can help with lymphatic drainage, fluid buildup and can be especially helpful after sitting or standing for long periods of time. It works by improving circulation as elevating your legs reduces pressure in your leg veins and helps blood flow back to your heart. It drains lymph fluid as gravity helps move fluid from your legs and feet back to your heart. This fluid is then cleansed in your lymph nodes, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system helping you relax and feel calm.
- Pay Attention to Your Body. Monitor your body for any unusual or adverse reactions following the treatment. If you experience prolonged pain, excessive swelling, or any concerning symptoms, please contact me or healthcare provider.
- Maintain Open Communication. Share any changes or concerns with me during future sessions. Your feedback and observations are valuable in tailoring your treatments to your needs.
Remember, lymphatic drainage massage works best when combined with a healthy lifestyle and regular care. By following these aftercare guidelines you can enhance the benefits of your treatment and support your overall well-being long term.
